In honor of the daughter she adopted serendipitously back in 1999, Russell today is laying the groundwork for a series of “Lily Houses” throughout China that will address the needs of those thousands of orphans left without a home or future at an early age. “The Lily House concept arose out of our desire to do something to help the older girls who remain in orphanages and are never adopted,” says Russell, who just came back from a fact finding mission to China and to visit the orphanage where Lily came from. “Very early on after bringing Lily home, I began to wonder, ‘if there are not adequate resources even while in the orphanages, what happens to these girls when they have to leave and re-enter society?’ The idea was born of my imaginings of the life Lily might have had if she had remained at the orphanage. Realizing the tremendous limitations of that life was a call to action.”
